U.S. Chamber Commends Florida House Justice Council for Passing Bill to Restore Fairness to State's Legal System
24 February 2006 Lisa Rickard, president of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform, today released the following statement regarding the Florida House Justice Council's passage of HB 145, a lawsuit reform bill to repeal joint and several liability and establish full proportionate liability: "Florida's employers and working families owe a debt of gratitude to the members of the House Justice Council who today voted to pass this vital lawsuit reform bill. "America's legal system was designed to provide fairness and balance for all who come before it - defendants, as well as plaintiffs. For too long, however, the scales of justice in Florida have been tilted in favor of opportunistic plaintiffs' lawyers seeking to get rich at the expense of employers. "HB 145 would repeal joint and several liability and establish full proportionate liability, so that Florida's employers would be required to pay their fair share in lawsuits - no more, no less. "We urge the full House to act quickly on HB 145 so that the burden of lawsuit abuse can be further lifted from the state's employers and workers, and fairness can be restored to Florida's civil justice system." --- Editor's Note: A 2005 Harris Survey of corporate attorneys ranked Florida 42nd out of 50 states in legal fairness, a drop of nine spots in three years. Eighty-one percent of respondents in that survey said a state's legal climate affects important decisions, such as where to locate or invest. http://www.usnewswire.com/
