29 July 2006 The China Pharmaceutical Association (CPA) and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), cosponsors of an annual conference in China, have invited two principals of a U.S. intellectual property law firm to address pharmaceutical professionals in Hangzhou, China. The two from Northbrook-based, Everest Intellectual Property Law Group (Everest IP) -- Joseph A. Fuchs, co-founder and managing partner of Everest IP, and Dr. Tin-Chuen Yeung, co-founder and managing director -- will be the only speakers from a U.S. law firm to address attendees at the prestigious, limited-attendance conference. They will speak in the Radisson Plaza Hotel Hangzhou on Wednesday, August 9. Fuchs will review and analyze patent enforcement claims and outcomes involving such popular drugs as Zoloft(R), Accupril(R) and Zyprexa(R) while Dr. Yeung will cover patent filing strategies to extend pharmaceutical product life cycles in the rapidly developing Chinese pharmaceutical market. Other speakers at the four-day event for industry, academic, research and government professionals include executives and scientists from Pfizer Inc., Abbott Laboratories, Novartis Pharmaceutical Corp. and the FDA. Prior to opening Everest IP, Fuchs and Dr. Yeung practiced in the IP Group of the 200-attorney, Chicago law firm of Bell, Boyd & Lloyd LLC. Each is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Fuchs, a former partner at Bell, Boyd & Lloyd who has practiced IP law for the past 16 years, is a pioneer in patent mapping and mining (investigation). Also a former chemist, he has presented at professional meetings and is published in professional and business journals, including AmericanVenturemagazine.com, which featured an IP due diligence article he co- authored with Dr. Yeung. Dr. Yeung, a former Harvard Medical School Research Fellow who was awarded the Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Foundation Fellowship, earned a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management. He was Head of Strategic Development for Life Sciences at Bell, Boyd & Lloyd and a senior-level executive at Baxter International Inc., where he managed acquisitions and strategic alliances as well as technology development and licensing. Profiled in the "The Scientist" (11/7/05), Dr. Yeung is an Advisory Board member of the International Trade Club of Chicago and Health Discovery Corporation, a publicly-held, biotechnology company in Savannah, GA. Clients of Everest IP, one of the few multi-partner, IP law firms on Chicago's North Shore, include Cardinal Health Inc., UOP LLC, the University of Illinois and Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.
