State Lawmakers to Probe Nursing Wages at Hearing Wednesday, Aug. 23;Legislative Committee's Action Follows Landmark Lawsuit

23 August 2006

News Advisory:

WHAT: Two months after Illinois nurses joined a class-action suit charging the state's largest hospital systems with colluding to suppress their wages, a state legislative committee will hold a hearing to probe the issue on Monday. Nurses from around the Chicago-area will testify about wage inequities that have exacerbated a chronic shortage in the industry. The wage stagnation has inhibiting recruitment of new nurses and threatens to compromise the quality and availability of health care in Illinois.

State Representative Mary Flowers (D-Chicago), chairperson of the House Health Care Availability and Access Committee, will preside over the hearing Wednesday.

WHEN: Wednesday, August 23, 2006 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

WHERE: Oakview Community Center, 4625 W. 110th Street, Oak Lawn

WHO:

State Rep. Mary Flowers - -- Chairperson, House Health Care Availability and Access Committee

Nurses from 15 different Chicago-area facilities

Vicky Lovell, Ph.D - -- Author of the report, "Solving the Nursing Shortage through Higher Wages"

WHY: While the nursing industry has been plagued by widespread shortages, wages for workers have nonetheless stagnated. This discrepancy bucks traditional economic rules of supply and demand and fuels questions about potential collusion among employers.
