Slam-A-Gavel - the "Whack-a-Mole" for Lawyers - Provides Stress Relief with a Humorous Twist

19 November 2006

It’s no secret that lawyers lead incredibly stressful lives: they operate under relentless time pressures in an adversarial environment that breeds hostility, conflict and cynicism. Now, lawyers can relieve their stress with Slam-A-Gavel, sold by The Billable Hour Company.

The patent-pending Slam-A-Gavel comes with a gavel, nine blocks with different stressors printed on each side, and a storage box with a square hole in the lid. The user selects a block, inserts it into the center of the storage box with the current stressor face-up, and closes the lid. Then, in a cathartic moment of release, the user slams the gavel down on the chosen block, producing a resounding, and satisfying, “whack.”

The nine wooden blocks display a total of 54 different stressors. Lawyers can slam their gavels on judges, juries, clients and even other lawyers. Employees, co-workers and “The Idiot Boss!” are all there as well (although simply slamming “I Hate This Job!” might be a more efficient approach). Personal stressors are well-represented, from families (including the ever-popular mother-in-law and ex-husband) to bills, taxes, neighbors, roommates and landlords. Liberals can slam conservatives and vice versa, and libertarians can slam the government. Those whose personal demons are not among the 52 identified stressors will find the “______________Fill in the Blank” and “Paste Ugly Photo Here!” blocks extremely useful.

Slam-A-Gavel inventor Henry Espinosa, a San Diego postal worker, hopes that his humorous invention will help users relieve stress and, as a result, avoid many of its negative consequences, including depression, headaches, low morale and decreased productivity. “I’m happy that The Billable Hour Company is helping to bring Slam-A-Gavel to the attention of those who need it most (aside from postal workers, of course!),” says Espinosa.

Slam-A-Gavel is available for $34.95 from The Billable Hour Company, at www.TheBillableHour.com/slamagavel.php.
