Purple Shoes And Social Justice

Purple Shoes And Social Justice

If you happen to see 300purple shoes lying about the University of Waikato groundsthis week -- don t be alarmed -- purple aliens have notlanded.

The purple-shoe display is a class projectinstigated by School of Education Associate Professor JoyceStalker. The title of the visual exhibit is: 'Take the firststep: Speak out to stop violence against women.

Joycesays each student of the 'Planning Learning Opportunitiesfor Adults class has to decorate or make four purple shoeseach. These will then be displayed from 10am-3:30pm onWednesday and Thursday March 22-23, near the Universityshops, S-block and on the Management school s steps.

Themajor part of the assignment is that the students willconsider their own and others reactions to the display andwrite an essay about the limitations and potential of theexhibit as a Popular Education technique. Joyce says Popular Education often uses such visual displays tohighlight a social justice message.

Inside the purpleshoes will be a pamphlet informing people of the violenceagainst women around the world. "This project is not aboutjust creating a pretty display. Rather it has a socialjustice agenda," says Joyce.

Joyce hopes that herstudents, who are mainly studying Industrial Relations andHuman Resource Management, will be challenged to think oflearning and teaching in new ways. Joyce says another keypurpose of the exhibit will be to encourage the students andlocal organisations to adopt the idea for their owncommunities.
