Prosper for Attorney General Releases Open Letter

25 October 2005

The Prosper for Attorney General campaign released the text of an open letter from Pierre-Richard Prosper to California Voters. California needs an experienced, proven prosecutor as the next Attorney General and today marks the beginning of an open dialogue with the voters.

"Dear Fellow Californians:

"In 1986 I arrived in California as a young adult and enrolled at Pepperdine University School of Law. I came to this State because it is a place of great hope and even greater possibilities. I graduated in 1989 and decided to give back to our State by becoming a prosecutor in the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, then as a career federal prosecutor in the Los Angeles United States Attorney’s office. It was my honor to serve you. Then, in mid-1996 my life took an unexpected turn. A turn which would forever instill in me the importance of the rule of law and of upholding humanity - I was called to Rwanda. Our government asked me to travel to Africa and become one of the United States prosecutors assigned to the UN war crimes tribunal dealing with the awful genocide. I was among the first to go. Since those days I have focused on promoting the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of the United States and humanity as the President’s Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues.

"Throughout my career I have worked to strengthen our country and community by adhering to core Republican principles. From the Hard Core Gang and drug prosecutions here in California where I saw senseless crimes destroy lives, to the horror of Genocide in Rwanda, and the awful events of September 11, 2001 and its aftermath, I have a been an eyewitness to tragedy. I have prosecuted and won tough convictions. The time is now for California to have an Attorney General that will work with our Sheriffs, District Attorneys and the State Legislature while managing the interests of the people inside the courtrooms of our great state. As the Chief Prosecutor, the Attorney General must build the confidence of the people in the integrity of their state government.

"My campaign for Attorney General of California is a challenge and I am equal to the task. My experiences have strengthened my resolve to protect California first. After the tragic attacks on our country in 2001, we all know the borders must be strengthened and that State officials must be prepared to respond to disasters and ensure order. As your Attorney General, I will work with local and federal officials to do just that.

"Together, we can transform the office of the Attorney General and our government to be responsive to the future. The Attorney General must be tough on crime, advocate for truth in sentencing, yet have a sense of compassion and treat victims and Californians with respect. You deserve real leadership that understands equality in justice is a reflection of our history and of our collective heritage.

"I hope to have your continued faith and support. In the coming weeks and months I will be traveling the state. I look forward to seeing you soon and I hope to earn your vote.

Kind regards,

Pierre-Richard Prosper"
