PCCD Funding Proven Programs That Reduce Youth Crime
16 April 2006 Programs that work to reduce youth crime in commonwealth communities will share more than $1 million, Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency Chairman Walter M. Phillips Jr., Esq., said today. "These grants will help communities develop a range of intervention programs that hold youth offenders accountable for their crimes, while also giving them the opportunity to change their behavior and repair the harm they have caused," said Phillips. Thirty-four Juvenile Accountability Block Grants are being awarded based on a formula that examines local law enforcement expenditures and arrest data. With the money, assistant district attorneys, juvenile probations officers, public defenders, school-based probation officers and juvenile court intake supervisors will be able to provide drug and alcohol treatment to offenders with substance abuse problems. Programs include truancy prevention, community service and restitution, youth aid panels, and courses for offenders who are re-entering the community after placement among other services. All programs must include collaborative relationships among police, juvenile court judges, probation officers, educators, juvenile agency officials, youth service providers, social service agencies, and community leaders. Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Justice. For more information visit the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency's website at http://www.pccd.state.pa.us.
