Nixon sues KC firm for misleading sales practices
25 January 2005Harriet Jones, owner of Nu Body Weight Management and Image Services, allegedly engaged in deceptive and fraudulent business practices beginning in December 2002, soliciting people to pay "set-up" fees of $10 to $50 to become direct-mail processors of advertising campaigns for the company, Nixon said. The suit was filed Friday.
Jones could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Fee payers were told that Nu Body sold weigh-loss programs and that they could earn thousands of dollars mailing promotional materials they would receive for the fees, Nixon said.
Although at least 40 Missourians registered and paid the fee, only three received mailing kits, and only one received a check for making mailings. That check didn't clear the bank, Nixon said.
Nixon said he's seeking a permanent injunction against Jones, restitution for all victims, a civil penalty of $1,000 for each violation and payment of the cost of the legal action.
