National Prison Rape Elimination Commission to Hold Public Hearing in Boston


Experts and Victims to Discuss Devastating Effects of Prison Sexual Abuse and Possible Remedies


The Nation Prison Rape Elimination Commission will convene a public hearing on Thursday, June 1, at the John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse in Boston, Mass. The focus of this hearing will be on the issues of sexual abuse of juveniles confined in detention and correctional facilities.


The Commission will examine Federal, State, and local juvenile authorities' efforts to remedy the problem. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, survivors of custodial sexual abuse, State and local detention and corrections professionals, and other experts, including United States Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, and local prosecuting attorneys involving sexual assaults on confined juveniles, will testify.


In an effort to bring this problem to light, former juvenile victims of sexual molestation while confined will testify about their traumatic experiences. The hearing will help provide the Commission with information to be included in its report to the President, Congress, and Federal and State officials. It will also assist the Commission formulate recommended national protocols and standards for the prevention, detection, and punishment of prison rape.
