Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox Announces Identity Theft Charges Against Two Nursing Home Employees
17 May 2006 Attorney General Mike Cox announced today that he has filed felony charges against two former employees of St. Michael Nursing Center, located at 19175 Anglin, in Detroit. Complaints against Marcus Lafrance Bailey, age 33, and Trina Lavette Carr, age 37, both of Detroit, were filed in the 36th Judicial District Court. "Nursing homes should be places where one can feel absolutely secure," said Cox. "My office will continue its efforts to ensure that nursing home residents are protected from identity theft." Bailey was a maintenance employee in the Dietary Department at St. Michael's until he was terminated in June 2005. Cox alleges that Bailey obtained the personal identity of a 74-year-old female Medicaid resident and used the information on July 27, 2005, to obtain a Comcast Cable account in the victim's name for the residence that he shared with Trina Carr. Bailey is charged with 1 count of Identity Theft, a 5-year and/or $10,000 felony. Carr, a Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) at St. Michael, was a frequent care provider for the victim. Carr is charged with 1 count of Aiding and Abetting Identity Theft, also a 5-year and/or $10,000 felony. A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
