Media Advisory - Fraser Institute event: "Public Interest Litigation: A Monopoly of the Left?"
20 October 2005John Carpay, executive director of the Canadian Constitution Foundation, will speak on Thursday, October 20, at a Fraser Institute event in Toronto, on "Public Interest Litigation: A Monopoly of the Left?" The Supreme Court of Canada's decision in the Chaoulli case this past June is a welcome signal that public interest litigation need not remain in the exclusive domain of those who advocate expanding the role and powers of the state. The Canadian Constitution Foundation intervenes in court cases in support of individual freedom, economic freedom, and equality before the law. Carpay will outline the important role that the newly-established foundation strives to play in emulating the success of "public interest" legal organizations established in the United States to intervene in similar court challenges. Using examples from actual cases, they will outline the opportunities and challenges faced in this field. Carpay is executive director of the Calgary-based Canadian Constitution Foundation. He earned his law degree at the University of Calgary, and was called to the Alberta Bar in 1999. He practiced civil litigation with Rooney Prentice in Calgary before joining the Canadian Taxpayers Foundation as Alberta director in 2001.
