Legal Scholars Discuss Supreme Court and Constitutional Issues at Association of American Law Schools Annual Meeting

30 December 2006

The Association of American Law Schools (AALS) will hold its Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel at 2660 Woodley Road, N.W., from January 2-6, 2007. Over 3,500 law faculty are expected to attend the conference focusing on a variety of issues central to law faculty in their roles as law teachers, scholars and citizens.

Several meeting programs will focus on the Supreme Court and constitutional issues facing society in the 21st century. On Thursday, January 4 from 10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. the AALS Section on Legislation presents "The Roberts Court and the Regulation of Politics." This session will examine the broad question of the Roberts Court and the future judicial regulation of politics through the lens of two cases from the Court's October 2005 docket: the Vermont campaign finance case (Randall v. Sorrell) and the Texas re- redistricting case (Sessions v. Perry).

The AALS Section on Constitutional Law will present "The Bush Presidency and the Constitution," on Friday, January 5, from 8:30-10:15 a.m. which will reflect on the meaning of the Bush presidency for the Constitution.

The Sections on Jurisprudence and Constitutional Law will co-sponsor a program entitled "Author Meets Critics: Our Undemocratic Constitution: Where the Constitution Goes Wrong (and How the People Can Correct It)," on Friday, January 5, from 10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. This session will focus on Professor Sanford Levinson's (University of Texas) forthcoming book, Where the Constitution Goes Wrong. The book examines the ways in which the United States Constitution is undemocratic, including for example, equal representation of states in the Senate, the electoral college, and the difficulty of amendment.

"The Embattled Federal Judiciary and Constitutional Justice" is a program presented by the Section on Federal Courts on Friday, January 5 from 1:30-3:15 p.m.

The entire AALS 2007 Annual Meeting program can be found on the Association's Web site at http://www.aals.org/am2007/index.html. Members of the press are invited to attend free of charge. Those interested in attending are asked to notify Deborah Quick from January 2-6, 2007 at (202) 745-2116. Press also may register on-site at the AALS office located in the Carolina Room on the Lobby Level of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel beginning Tuesday evening, January 2, 2007, and continuing through Saturday, January 6, 2007.
