Lawyers' Committee For Civil Rights Under Law to Conduct a Parental Empowerment Workshop in Columbia County, Georgia
29 July 2006 News Advisory: On Monday July 31, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law ("Lawyers' Committee") will conduct a free "Parental Empowerment Workshop" in Columbia County, Georgia. The purpose of the workshop is to teach parents and community members how to advocate on behalf of their children and how to ensure that their children are receiving a quality education. "I am really excited about the workshop," said Columbia County resident Glynis Key. "As a parent, I think that I can do a better job of advocating for my child and making sure he gets a quality education if I know what his rights are." During the workshop, attorneys and advocates will teach parents about their children's legal rights with respect to student discipline, special education services and the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The workshop will also teach parents how to make sure their children have access to quality curriculum that prepares them for college and how to ensure that their children are prepared for high stakes examinations such as the Georgia High School Graduation Test ("GHGT"). The workshop is open to the public and attendees will be provided with guidebooks that discuss their children's educational legal rights.
