King & Spalding Completes Its Move to New Atlanta Office Building
28 March 2006 King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, announced today the completion of its Atlanta office relocation to the 1180 Peachtree Building. Approximately 1,000 lawyers and staff occupy the firm's new space, which offers an enhanced work environment that encourages collaboration, teamwork and efficient client service. "The innovative design of our new office space promotes efficiency and productivity and will benefit our clients as well as our employees," said Robert D. Hays, Jr., who became Chairman of the firm on January 1. "The space offers room for growth -- which remains a top priority for the firm -- and flexibility which permits us to respond to ever-changing demands in the delivery of services to our clients." For example, the design permits the easy conversion of paralegal offices to large workrooms and back again -- allowing the firm to respond quickly to the ebb and flow of major deals and big-case litigation." King & Spalding occupies two-thirds of the new building, which was designed by Pickard Chilton, utilizing 417,000 square feet on 17 floors, providing sufficient space for the firm's projected growth through 2009, with options for additional expansion in the future. Gensler is responsible for the interior design, which, in addition to the standard complement of offices and conference rooms, features extra team workspaces and furnishings to stimulate professional interaction. More natural light throughout the office combined with ten-foot ceilings gives the space a warm, open feel. Other features include a state-of-the-art data center with an uninterruptible power system, numerous conference rooms with built-in audio-visual capability, a conference center with wireless connectivity for visiting clients and lawyers, and a dining facility serving lawyers and staff overlooking the site of the proposed new Atlanta Symphony Center to which the firm has previously made a significant financial commitment. Since 1991, when King & Spalding moved into its former space (191 Peachtree), the firm's Atlanta office has nearly doubled in size -- from 535 employees to approximately 1,000 today, of which about 400 are lawyers (in comparison to 222 in 1991). "Coupled with our focus on growth is our goal of attracting and retaining the best and brightest lawyers at King & Spalding," said Mason W. Stephenson, managing partner of the Atlanta office. "We wanted the design and location of the office to appeal to both our attorneys and clients. The more contemporary 'feel' of our space coupled with the '24-hour city' environment of Midtown should help in our recruiting efforts." This summer the firm will also relocate its litigation support operations and a number of back-office functions to new space less than two blocks away at 1230 West Peachtree Street. In addition, later in the fall, lawyers and staff will be able to take advantage of a new childcare facility to be located at the 1230 West Peachtree space. This month, King & Spalding is auctioning surplus furniture from its former downtown Atlanta space and is contributing the net proceeds to Atlanta Habitat for Humanity.
