Fundraiser for Bethany Hospital Blasted as Hoax, West Siders Protest Posh Downtown Event; Will File Complaint with Attorney Gen.

21 May 2006

News Advisory:

-- Fundraiser for Bethany Hospital Blasted as 'Hoax,' West Siders Protest Posh Downtown Event; Will File Complaint with Attorney General

-- Advocate Health Care Soliciting Donations to Fund Bethany While Company Seeks to Cut Major Services There As Early as June 6

WHAT: Opponents of the Bethany cuts will demonstrate outside the Auditorium Theater, where the Advocate Charitable Foundation will hold a fundraiser purported to benefit Bethany's low-cost services for the poor, known as "charity care." The groups charge that Advocate is conducting the event under false pretenses, because the company is simultaneously seeking to eliminate crucial services available to low-income West Siders under a pending proposal before state regulators.

The groups also will announce that they will file a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General's office, asking it investigate whether the fundraiser violated any laws.

VISUAL: PROTESTERS OUTSIDE THE BLACK TIE EVENT WILL WHEEL IN HOSPITAL BEDS, WHEELCHAIRS, AND I.V. POLES TO THE AUDITORIUM'S ENTRANCE, ILLUSTRATING THE LOSS OF BETHANY'S EMERGENCY SERVICES.

MORE THAN 200 DEMONSTRATORS ARE EXPECTED.

B-Roll Footage of Bethany Hospital Will Be Available

WHEN/WHERE: TODAY, Saturday, May 20, at 6 p.m.

Northeast Corner of Congress Pkwy and Wabash Ave.

Auditorium Theatre

WHY: Under its proposal to the Illinois Health Facilities Board (IHFPB), Advocate wants to purge Bethany's OB/GYN unit, mental health services and substance abuse program - on top of its recent closure of the facility's emergency room. The IHFPB is scheduled to rule on the proposed Bethany cuts on June 6.
