21 May 2006 News Advisory: -- Fundraiser for Bethany Hospital Blasted as 'Hoax,' West Siders Protest Posh Downtown Event; Will File Complaint with Attorney General -- Advocate Health Care Soliciting Donations to Fund Bethany While Company Seeks to Cut Major Services There As Early as June 6 WHAT: Opponents of the Bethany cuts will demonstrate outside the Auditorium Theater, where the Advocate Charitable Foundation will hold a fundraiser purported to benefit Bethany's low-cost services for the poor, known as "charity care." The groups charge that Advocate is conducting the event under false pretenses, because the company is simultaneously seeking to eliminate crucial services available to low-income West Siders under a pending proposal before state regulators. The groups also will announce that they will file a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General's office, asking it investigate whether the fundraiser violated any laws. VISUAL: PROTESTERS OUTSIDE THE BLACK TIE EVENT WILL WHEEL IN HOSPITAL BEDS, WHEELCHAIRS, AND I.V. POLES TO THE AUDITORIUM'S ENTRANCE, ILLUSTRATING THE LOSS OF BETHANY'S EMERGENCY SERVICES.
