LocalGovernment New Zealand is delighted with the announcement byLocal Government Minister, Hon Mark Burton, of a contestablefund of $250,000 for councils to strengthen crime preventionthrough environmental design (CPTED).

"The National CrimePrevention through Environmental Design guidelines werelaunched in November last year to assist councils withreducing crime in public spaces. "Under the Local Government Act 2002,councils are required to promote the cultural and socialwell-being of their communities. Crimeprevention through environmental design can involve simplethings like trimming trees to increase visibility through tomore comprehensive approaches such as re-designing towncentres.

"Councils are the main caretakers of our openspaces and are in a position where they can help reduceopportunities for crime to occur. This funding will assistcouncils with the first steps towards making our communitiessafer places to live, work and playin."
