Entrust Helps Keep Law Enforcement Information Under Tighter Wraps

6 June 2006

Often, a criminal investigation may only need one or two pieces of key information to be solved, but unfortunately, that information may happen over a wide spread of law enforcement jurisdictions. That is why police officers and other law enforcement groups need a way to share information, but access to this information must be limited to authorized personnel. In fact, several federal grants have mandated key information be kept behind multiple layers of authentication to protect the citizens. That is why Entrust, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENTU) is proud to provide another layer of user authentication with its Entrust IdentityGuard solution to the Alaska Law Enforcement Information Sharing System (ALEISS).

This stronger authentication will give ALEISS users access to the Coplink(R) knowledge management technology distributed by Knowledge Computing Corporation (http://www.coplink.com ). Coplink serves as a portal to access consolidated criminal history information from participating ALEISS agencies.

"When organizations strengthen authentication, the result is better access for the people who should have it. This can lead to greater efficiency and a better flow of communication," said Entrust Senior Vice President Kevin Simzer. "Having this strong authentication system for the agencies of the ALEISS Consortium can help them to solve even more crimes and share information even more freely than before -- all this with the peace of mind knowing that users credentials are being strongly authenticated before users are granted access to this data."

Entrust IdentityGuard, a platform that supports a range of authentication options, will provide a second factor of authentication for ALEISS-supported agencies to access the Coplink system. Coplink is knowledge management software that organizes and rapidly analyzes vast quantities of data to help law enforcement agencies quickly solve crimes. Coplink allows ALEISS users to query and manipulate that data for tactical crime analysis and lead generation. Entrust IdentityGuard was chosen for its ease of use and integration, flexibility and cost effectiveness.

"When crimes happen, the different pieces of evidence that come in don't always come together and make sense. It's not like you see on television. Sometimes all the officers we support have is a partial license plate number or a vague description of the perpetrator," said Juneau Chief Greg Browning, ALEISS Chairman. "But we have to closely guard the seemingly disparate pieces of information and carefully check credentials so that only authorized personnel have access to our database. Entrust IdentityGuard will give us the strong authentication we need without being a high-priced, battery powered token or piece of technology that requires user training. Police officers have a big enough job to do without having to go to a class on how to access databases."

The National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) system, a program of the US Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice (NIJ), provides no-cost "hands-on" assistance in helping agencies, large and small, identify and implement current and emerging technologies to assist them in their mission.

The NLECTC system was established in 1994 by NIJ's Office of Science and Technology to deliver information and technology assistance to the more than 18,000 police departments; 50 state correctional systems; thousands of prisons, jails, and parole and probation departments; and other public safety organizations. NLECTC-Northwest, based in Anchorage Alaska, helped facilitate the formation of the ALEISS Consortium and the deployment of the ALEISS system as a demonstration of this new technology.
