Downtown Los Angeles Japanese American Citizens League Request Bush to Appoint Asian American for U.S. Supreme Court

17 October 2005

The Downtown Los Angeles Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League wants President Bush to withdraw the nomination of White House Counsel Harriet Miers and replace her with a qualified Asian American.

"It is a sad day in America when someone is nominated to the highest court in America based primarily on their friendship with the President," stated Kitty Sankey, President of the Downtown Los Angeles Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League.

"It is even sadder that President Bush refused to even consider the many qualified Asian Americans who have a very distinguished legal track record," stated Sankey.

"There are many qualified Asian Americans who have actually served as federal and state judges, argued cases before the United States Supreme Court, and who have argued land mark cases that have impacted our community in a positive way," stated Sankey. "Ms. Miers, on the other hand, has no judicial experience nor any signficant legal accomplishments. She is clearly not qualified."

Sankey wants President Bush to consider five U.S. District Court Judges, one civil rights attorney, one former Assistant U.S. Attorney General, one former California Senior Assistant Attorney General, four State Supreme Court Justices, one federal appeals Justice and one of the country's most prominent public defenders.

Sankey wants the President to consider the following persons: United States Federal District Court Judges Robert Takasugi and Ronald Lew of the Central District Court in Los Angeles, Federal Judge Anthony Ishii of the Eastern District Court in Sacramento, Federal Judge Denny Chin of the Southern District Court in New York and Federal Judge Susan Oki Mollway of Hawaii, 9th Circuit Judge Wallace Tashima, California Supreme Court Justices Joyce Kennard and Ming Chen, Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald Moon, and Associate Justice Paula Nakayama, Civil Rights Attorney Dale Minami, Elected San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi, former California Senior Assistant Attorney General John Sugiyama, and former Assistant U.S. Attorney General Rose Ochi who also served as Associate Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

The Downtown Los Angeles Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League is one of the oldest nonprofit Asian American Civil Rights Group based in Los Angeles, California.
