Dominican Man Charged with Lying on U.S. Passport Application, Reports U.S. Attorney
11 November 2005A Dominican man was charged today in federal court with lying on a U.S. passport application. United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan; James Ennis, Special Agent in Charge of the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service in New England; and Leo J. Sullivan, Special Agent in Charge of the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General in New England, announced today that SANTOS EPIFANIO ARIAS, of the Dominican Republic, was charged in a three-count Indictment with filing a false U.S. passport application, falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen, and illegally re-entering the United States after being deported. The Indictment alleges that in November of 2003, ARIAS filed a false application for a U.S. passport in Malden, Massachusetts, in which, among other things, he claimed to be a U.S. citizen. The Indictment further alleges that at the time he filed the application, ARIAS was illegally in the United States as a previously deported alien. If convicted, ARIAS faces up to 20 years' imprisonment, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Additionally, upon completion of any prison sentence that may be imposed, ARIAS faces deportation to his native Dominican Republic. The case was investigated by the Diplomatic Security Service and the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney S. Waqar Hasib in Sullivan's Major Crimes Unit. The details contained in the Indictment are allegations. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
