Community College of Philadelphia's Law and Society Week 2006 (Feb. 24 - March 2)

Domestic partnerships, gun violence, the mob, crime mapping and the Philadelphia Archdiocese's sex abuse scandal are just a few of the topics that will be discussed at the 7th Annual Law and Society Week this year.


Presented by the college's Center for Law and Society, the Justice Curriculum, the Computer Forensics Curriculum, and the Paralegal Studies Program, the week of events has something for everyone.


Unless otherwise indicated all events are open to the public and do not require reservations. Please see building guide at the end of this schedule for event locations.


Friday, Feb. 24


9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Special Pre-Event High School Day (reservations required)


Students from around the city join us for an exciting and interactive introduction to law and legal professions. To register (must be a current high school student) call Linda Hibbs at (215)751-8908.


Monday, Feb. 27


11:15 a.m. - 12:10 p.m. Youth Violence Reduction Program


John Delaney, deputy district attorney and co-chair Youth Violence Reduction Partnership, leads this session on the important issue of violence and youth in the city. Location: Room S 2-3


3 p.m. - 4 p.m. A Conversation with George Anastasia


George Anastasia, an award-winning author and reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer, discusses his career covering the Mob and notorious trials as well as his experiences in publishing. Location: Teaching Center


4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Opening Reception and Awards


Come celebrate the official opening of the 7th Annual Law and Society Week and help us honor this year's recipients of the Center for Law and Society Public Service Awards. Location: Room S 2-19


6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Gay Marriage, Civil Unions and Domestic Partnerships (co-sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign)


Lee Carpenter, a staff attorney for the Pennsylvania Center for Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights, and Brian Moulton, the staff counsel for the Human Rights Campaign, will discuss the current state of the law and the activities underway to change legislation. Moderator: Ted Faigle of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy and Practice. Location: Room S 2-3


Tuesday, Feb. 28


9:30 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. The Artist and the Lawyer: One Life in Two Worlds


Tonya Evans-Walls, an attorney/poet/performance artist, will perform and discuss her life in the arts and the law. Location: Room S 2-3


9 a.m. - 10 a.m. Can An 11-Year-Old Murderer Be Saved? The Case for Miriam White


Sandra Simkins, assistant chief of the Juvenile Unit of the Defender Association of Philadelphia, discusses the provocative case of an 11-year-old murderer and the issues of juvenile rehabilitation and incarceration. Location: Room NERC


9 a.m. - 10 a.m. Gun Violence and Our Youth


Joe Davis of Magee Rehabilitation leads this panel that will discuss the tragic effects of gun violence on Philadelphia youth and strategies to curb the escalation of violence. Location: NWRC


11 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. The First Amendment and "Hate Speech" on the College


Campus


Samantha Harris and Robert Shibley of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education address the First Amendment obligations of public universities and how "hate speech" regulations violate those obligations. Location: Room S 2-3


12:30 p.m. - 1:50 p.m. The Judges' Panel


A panel of distinguished judges will discuss their lives in the law. Location: Room S 2-19


2 p.m. - 3:20 p.m. The Grand Jury and the Archdiocese


Maureen McCartney, who served as the counsel to the grand jury investigating the sex abuse scandal in the Philadelphia Archdiocese, will discuss the work of the grand jury. Location: Room S 2-3


6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Technology in the Courtroom


Technological advances have changed the ability to entertain juries with computer-enhanced presentations. This will be a demonstration in law-related computer/video wizardry by expert Lee Diamondstein, Esquire. Location: Room S 2-3


Wednesday, March 1


8 a.m. - 8:55 a.m. Crime Mapping: Geography and Crime


In this fascinating technical demonstration, the Philadelphia Police Department will demonstrate how it uses computer graphics and geography to map incidents of crime and predict crime trends. Location: Room S 2-3


9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Changing Laws and Social Institutions: The Civil Rights Era


The Civil Rights era resulted in fundamental change in law and the reformulation of social institutions. This session will look at the role of individuals in effectuating changes during the Civil Rights era and consider the legacy of that era. Location: Room WRC


11:15 a.m. - 12:10 p.m. International Student Panel: The Law in Other Lands


Ever wonder how the law differs in other countries? Are criminal laws the same everywhere? How are adolescent offenders treated around the world? This panel of students and graduates will discuss their perceptions on the legal environment in their native lands. Location: Room S 2-3


12:20 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. Memory and the Law


Psychology Professor Rick Frei will discuss the fascinating and evolving field of memory in the law. Topics will include witnesses, memory fabrication and the reliability of eyewitness testimony. Location: Room S 2-3


11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Community Legal Forum


Organizations from the community will provide information on a range of topics, including crime prevention, victim's assistance, housing and immigration. Location: Bonnell Cafeteria


5 p.m. - 6 p.m. Reception, Networking and Awards Event for Paralegal, Justice and Computer Forensics Students and Graduates. Location: Room S 2-3


6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Women and Employment: A Consideration of the Law (co-sponsored by the Women's Studies Curriculum)


Sex discrimination and sexual harassment in a legal context are the subjects of this important session. Location: Room NWRC


Thursday, March 2


9:15 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Legal Implications of Nursing


Experts on law and medicine and veterans of more than 300 jury cases will discuss nursing and issues of legal liability in medicine. Location: Room S 2-19


9:30 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. Philadelphia C.S.I.


The Philadelphia Police Department's Crime Scene Unit will explain its role in investigating crime. Please be aware that actual crime scene photos will be shown. Location: The Large Auditorium BG 10


11 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. A Farewell to Justice: A Conversation with Author Joan Mellen


Author Joan Mellen will discuss her recent book, A Farewell to Justice, a fascinating account of the trial of Clay Shaw for his involvement in the plot to assassinate President Kennedy. Location: Room S 2-3


11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Community Legal Forum


(Held on Wed., March 1 and Thurs., March 2)

A panel of experts will discuss the role of the media in reporting crime. Moderated by Philadelphia Police Department Inspector William Colarulo. Confirmed panelists include Vernon Odom of Channel 6, Claudia Gomez of Fox News, Harry Hairston of Channel 10, and Barbara Boyer of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Location: Room S 2-19


2 p.m. - 3:20 p.m. When Free Speech Isn't Free: Orhan Pamuk in Turkey (co- sponsored by the Title VI Middle East Project)


Dena Sukol examines U.S. and Turkish free speech constitutional provisions in light of the extraordinary case of Ohran Pamuk, an author threatened with imprisonment in Turkey for comments made during a media interview outside the country. Location: Room S 2-3

"S" = Winnet Student Life Building is located on the west side of 17th Street, south of Spring Garden Street. Events held in this yellow-brick building with the rounded exterior will be held on the second floor.


"W" = West Building is located on 17th Street on the west side of the street, at the corner of Spring Garden Street. The entrance is on 17th Street and the events will be held on the second floor.


"B" = Bonnell Building is on east side of 17th Street, south of Spring Garden Street. The building is set back from the sidewalk by a stairway.


"Bonnell Cafeteria" = Located in the Bonnell Building, which is on east side of 17th Street, south of Spring Garden Street. The building is set back from the sidewalk by a stairway.


"NWRC" = North West Regional Center is located at 1300 West Godfrey Street at the corner of Broad and Godfrey streets. Signs at the center will indicate the room.


"NERC" = North East Regional Center is located at 12901 Townsend Road. Signs at the center will indicate the room.


"WRC" = West Regional Center is located at 4725 Chestnut Street. Signs at the center will indicate the room.
