Australian Aid to Strengthen Law and Order in Vanuatu

TheAustralian Government, through its international aid agency,AusAID, will provide $38 million to strengthen law and orderand fight corruption in Vanuatu.

Until recently the peopleof Vanuatu have had limited access to legal services orvictim support. Over the past two years Australia ha sdelivered an interim police support program which hasrefurbished the Southern Command police headquarters in PortVila, reviewed and refined police administration, policy andprocedures and established a Community Legal Clinic.

Thisnew initiative is comprised of $28 million to help theVanuatu Government reform its police force and $10 millionto strengthen the country's justice system over the nextfive years. R einforcing Vanuatu's cornerstone lawenforcement and legal institutions is integral to restoringpeace and stability.

With Australia's support, the VanuatuGovernment is working to create a professional, accountableand community-oriented police force while enhancing existingcrime prevention and victim support services.

This nextphase of the Legal Sector Strengthening Program will helpincrease the efficiency of Vanuatu's courts and support thethree public legal offices: the Public Prosecutor's Office, the State Law Office and the Public Solicitor'sOffice.

These two initiatives will draw on the technicalexpertise of the Australian Federal Police and the New SouthWales Attorney-General's Department in partnership with theGovernment of Vanuatu. This approach underlines Australia'scommitment to drawing on the wider expertise availableacross government in Australia in support of development inthe Pacific.

Australia's total development assistance toVanuatu (in 2005-2006) is estimated at $34.1million.
