ACVR Legislative Fund Asks Rep. John Conyers to Join Call for Detroit Vote Fraud Investigation
5 November 2005The American Center for Voting Rights Legislative Fund ("ACVR Legislative Fund") today urged Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) to join its call for an investigation into possible vote fraud in Detroit. "No Detroit resident should be disenfranchised by an illegally cast ballot and these apparently credible reports of vote fraud merit a federal investigation," said Thor Hearne, ACVR legislative fund counsel. The Detroit News this week uncovered evidence of ballots cast by people registered to long-demolished and abandoned buildings, a city voter list with 380,000 incorrect names and addresses -- including dead people and people who have moved out of Detroit, and the disturbing practice of hand-delivering ballots from senior citizens and disabled voters -- including Alzheimer's Disease patients -- filled out in private meetings with paid city election workers. "The conduct outlined in recent reports on vote fraud in Detroit suggests serious violations of federal and state law and undermines the confidence of voters that their ballot will be fairly counted on November 8," Hearne said. "As a Representative of Detroit in the U.S. House and an influential leader on voting rights issues, we hope Rep. Conyers will join our call for a thorough inquiry on these vital issues." ACVR Legislative Fund formally requested a vote fraud investigation in letters sent yesterday to Stephen J. Murphy, III, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, Alice S. Fisher, assistant attorney general for the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox.
